Coronation Street fans have said it’s ‘not okay’ as they were left unimpressed by the latest blackmail twist to hit the cobbles. It’s been another dramatic week in Weatherfield with a hit-and-run leaving David Platt and Daisy Midgeley’s lives in danger.
As fans of the ITV soap know, the car accident was orchestrated by David, played by Jack P Shepherd, after he felt he had no other option to get the money he owes gangster Harvey Gaskell.
The huge sum of cash was actually offered to David’s sister Sarah Platt by her former flame, and Harvey’s brother, Damon Hay, after he heard about her daughter Bethany’s bodged surgery in Turkey.
But David intercepted and took the money for himself in order to buy his mum Gail’s home as she planned to quit Weatherfield following her wedding to Jesse Chadwick, which she did in December after spending 50 years on the Cobbles.
It was then during Monday night’s (March 3) Corrie, viewers saw David was confronted by former prison mate Andy Garland, who he had been doing criminal jobs for, when he pulled out a knife and said Harvey wanted him dead for his life insurance payout.
David, who had earlier been in court where his stepson Max Turner was sentenced to six and a half years in prison for arson, managed to see Andy off without causing any damage. But later in the episode he was called back to the salon by David who had a shocking offer to take his life as it was the only way to keep his family safe.
Then, during Wednesday night’s (March 5) Corrie, David’s plan played out. He e spent time writing notes to his family and talking to his grandmother Audrey Roberts, with his inner monologue heard throughout as he counted down to 2pm, the moment he planned for Andy to plough into him in the middle of the street.
When the final moments began, David stood in the middle of the road. A car then came hurtling at speed, and Shona watched in horror as David was ploughed in to, with Daisy Midgeley caught in the crossfire.
The pair were rushed to hospital with David’s life hanging in the balance, with medics having to bring him back around before doing emergency surgery and placing him in a coma.
Now, during the last episode of Corrie of the week on Friday (March 7), there was relief for the Platts as David regained consciousness but Shona was soon left in despair as she discovered that David had organised the hit on his own life. David explained that he’d wanted the Platts to pay Harvey back via his life insurance once he was dead, keeping everyone safe.
David admitted he still couldn’t see a way to get Harvey off their backs and completely heartbroken, Shona set about taking matters into her own hands. Storming into Daisy’s room at the hospital, after she lost her unborn baby in the accident, Shona demanded she give her the £40,000 she needed to give back to Harvey – or she’ll tell the police about her running her over in Debbie Webster’s stolen car, which was originally nicked by Daniel Osbourne.
Leaning of Daisy’s baby loss, Shona apologised and fled from the room feeling deeply ashamed. But later, Daisy vowed to give Shona the money to keep her and Daniel out of prison.
But Corrie fans were both horrified and confused by the scenes. @TVMusings22 said: “Wow Shona blackmailing Daisy after what she’s just had to go through! Nah I’m not okay with this #corrie.” @Phoenix_Gsds wrote: “Right! It’s not like it was the Platts money and Daisy may have knocked Shona down but it’s David’s fault that Daisy’s now in hospital!”
