Filipino superstar Nora Aunor passes away at 71, fans remember her legacy

Nora Aunor, a celebrated Filipino actor and National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, died on April 16, 2025, at the age of 71. Her son, Kristoffer Ian De Leon, confirmed her death in a social media post. Aunor, known for her extensive career in television, music, and film, worked in 200 TV shows and films, receiving several awards, including the Philippines’ highest honour for the arts in 2022.

While sharing the news of Aunor’s death on Facebook, her son Ian De Leon wrote: “We love you ma. God knows how much we love you.. Rest in peace, Mom.. You are always here in our hearts and minds,” he said in another post. Nora’s daughter, Maret, also expressed her love, saying, “I love you mommy.”

He then posted again with the message remembering her mother: “With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we share the passing of our beloved mother, Nora C. Villamayor “Nora Aunor” who left us on today April 16, 2025 at the age of 71. She was the heart of our family — a source of unconditional love, strength, and warmth. Her kindness, wisdom, and beautiful spirit touched everyone who knew her. She will be missed beyond words and remembered forever.”

The cause of death has not been officially confirmed by the family or authorities. According to Filipino news organisation INQUIRER.net, Nora Aunor was at a Pasig hospital for a procedure, but did not provide further details.

Born into a poor family in Iriga, Aunor began her career in the 1960s as a singer before transitioning to acting. She became a prominent figure in Philippine entertainment.


Her film credits include 1995’s -The Flor Contemplacion Story-, where she played a Filipino maid executed in Singapore. Aunor received local and international awards for her performance in this film. Her most recent appearances included the 2024 TV series -Lilet Matias, Attorney-at-Law- and a cameo in the musical -Isang Himala-.Aunor was married to Filipino actor Christopher de Leon from 1975 to 1996. They had five children together.Lotlot de Leon, Aunor’s daughter and actor, shared her sentiments on Instagram. “She touched generations with her unmatched talent, grace, and passion for the craft. Her voice, presence, and artistry shaped a legacy that will never fade,” she wrote.

Tributes have poured in on social media, with many acknowledging Aunor’s contributions to Philippine cinema. One person noted the recent passing of two icons in the Philippine entertainment industry.

“What a heartbreaking moment in the Philippine entertainment industry. In just a week, two icons passed away: The Asia’s Queen of Song and the National Artist for Film / Superstar. A great loss for our country. Rest in peace, Ms. Pilita Corrales and Nora Aunor.”

Another person commented on Aunor receiving the National Artist honor during her lifetime.

“Rest in peace to the Superstar of Philippine Cinema and Queen of Mata-Mata Acting, Nora Aunor. Politics aside, it’s a comfort knowing you received the National Artist honor while you were still with us.”
